Impressed, confused… humbled.

Wow.  Wow… I am staring at the screen wondering where to start.  I am so impressed by the level of work.  The amount of time and commitment is obvious and appreciated.  USA had a really impressive set up- I have nothing of the past to compare to, but it was interesting to walk through and see, from someone else’s point of view, how the US is represented in theatre around the world.  There were some exhibitions that just plain confused me or disappointed me.  I felt in many instances that the push to impress with “flashy-ness” out weighed me learning about their country.  Other times it seemed as if there was nothing there… if you are going to come, do it right.  ya know?  I was saddened by Hong Kong’s exhibit… it seemed to be pushing the easily recognizable paraphernalia instead of exhibiting their ability, work, and style.  On the other hand, I felt very humbled by the display from Japan.  Taking something so recognizable (and especially right now, so popular) as a sushi bar and turn it into almost a scenery prop to display their work on, is amazing.  The student work was fascinating as well.  What talent!  And, to know that the students present the work are the same age as us here… envy.  Wow.  To have the talent to draw and paint and construct is all something that can be taught.  You can not teach originality!  You can not teach someone to be creative.  I feel over loaded.  I felt over loaded when we finished the other day, too.  I still have not seen the upstairs of the center room.  Wow… there’s just so much to say but I think it is all stuck at the exit of my brain because it’s all trying to get out at once.  So much.  Wow.  Thanks for presenting this amazing opportunity Rob.  I can’t wait to be back in 4 years!

  1. I feel overloaded too but i really enjoyed the experience. It was too bad that you were so confused by many of them because that means they do their job. :-(

  2. Do you think that Hong Kong’s exhibit said something about the personality of Hong Kong? Perhaps that is difficult to say if you don’t know a lot about the country. It is worth looking into. As for the other more confusing pavillions, while they don’t approach the PQ the same way we do, they are trying to convey SOMETHING. What is it? What does it inform us about them as a people? I am thinking of Switzerland and Hungary and Bulgaria, but there are others. Think about it. Talk to the rest of the group about it.

  3. Yes… I see that they are trying to convey their own story… but, what story? Whatever story they are telling or trying to tell, rather, didn’t come through- for me anyway. Lost in translation??
