Great Expectations

Great expectation is what I have for this trip. I am not a theater major I have no acting abilities; I have performed some dance (salsa) performances in high school I have also participated in stepping also in high so I have been in front of an audience. While this may have been nerve racking it is hardly anything close to actually participating in a theater performance. Not to say that don’t like theater or to say I don’t respect the performers and the rest of the people involved. I am just not driven to participate mainly because I am shy and don’t like to be the center of attention. Yet among this and other reasons I will not bore you with. I still chose to go on this trip. Why participate in the program then? This may be the question crossing your mind. Honestly I no clue my self. I can tell you what attracted me to the program. The fact that I will arrive earlier which means more time in
Europe which sounds great to me. So yes I wanted more time but really I am also glad to able to learn about something different. The opportunity to experience theater performances that I would other wise never experience. Since I am not a theater major or have studied it, the quadrennial really does not carry the excitement it carries to some one who is that involved. So to get excited, I will think about it this way: I love soccer and the world cup is also every four years and if I was going to a world cup I would very excited so in order to fully appreciate the experience I am going to use that as my motivation to really be there and trully engulf my self in this opprtunity. I also had the opportunity to hang out with the rest of the people on the trip I think we are going to get along really well and have a good time. I expect this to be a great experience experiencing world theater and having the company of  some really interesting people.

  1. I am thrilled to see you are choosing experience and adventure over inhibition. I also hope that, on this trip, you will find that participation in Theare does not have to mean being the center of attention. In fact, there are F-A-R more people who work to get a show onstage that are never seen onstage.

Interesting comparison to the World Cup. Though I think there is little danger of the hype ever reaching an eighth of WC proportions, I like the idea of this international gathering every four years. And there is some element of competition involved. The Triga awards are given in different categories (I think the Brits–my favorites–won the big overall award in 2003). You can buy a t-shirt, but probably not a jersey.

  2. Ok, so i officially dispise blogs since i have been going all over this site for about the last 20 minutes trying to figure how to post something and have failed miserable in the attempt. whatever.
Anyway, being as my computer illiterate self can not even set up a myspace account to save my life, here is my posty thinga-mabob that we’re all supposed to submit:

To be quite honest, I’m not a theatre major, nor do i ever intend to be. Theatre is awesome. I had a lot of fun with it in high school. I would so work for the theatre if some one asked me to, but i just don’t see it as a career path….
With that said, i opted for the add-on for many of the same reasons that James did. This would probably be the only way i could ever truely begin to appreciate something like the Quadrenial – or theatre and everything put into it, for that matter. Theatre fascinates me, and this seems to be an awesome way to get a hands-on(ish) education without having to spend a whole semester in a class room worrying about projects and exams (no offense Rob…). Besides, i’m always up for exploring more of this tiny planet and everything that goes on here, so why not? What could i possibly lose in attempting to expand my knowledge base and put a check mark next to one more item on my “Things To Do Before I Die” list. (*insert que for loud thunder noises and heavy rains here*)

  3. Okay so I’m also having problems trying to leave a blog thingie but no biggie I’ll just leave a reply and hope it counts.

  4. okay so I will continue, Why do this program? Well unlike the previous bloggers I am a theatre major…I love theatre in my own little way. This program seemed perfect for me. You see, I am not sure which aspect I want to go in yet, whether it is on stage or behind the scenes, so I was hoping that this program might help me decide. It also seemed like the perfect timing because I’ve always wanted to study abroad but always thought it would be too costly for me, as it turned out this opportunity arose and I chose to take it also being that this is my last summer in FIU since I am graduating in December (Hopefully), I had to take advantage. Of course Rob was in charge of the program so I knew it would be worthwhile (extra points lol).

  5. but I hope in the future to own a theatre company that involves many different cultures and what better way to learn about cultures than the Quadrenial. So I’m going to stop posting things because I keep getting logged off and then I end up with lots of blogs. So I will see everyone soon and have a safe flight to all. Carinita

  6. Whether you are a theatre major or not just witnessing the works of great artists present their finest products out of a four year period is just wonderful knowing that we theatre add-ons were given the opportunity to see it all! I hope that my time in Prague will help me gain better perspective of what I plan to do with my degree. This study abroad is my first and certainly will not be my last! Good luck to everyone on gaining something special from the experience! Michelle
